For Which Teams Did Zach Edey Play?
Edey began participating in basketball with the Northern Kings Amateur Athletic Union program while a sophomore at Toronto’s Leaside High School.
Edey relocated to the US and enrolled in Bradenton, Florida’s IMG Academy. In his first year, he joined their second-tier squad and worked every day with Daniel Santiago, the former NBA player and IMG coach. The next year, Edey was elevated to the national team for the school.
He qualified for the 2020 class and got offers from schools like Santa Clara and Baylor, but he elected to play collegiate basketball for Purdue instead. At the FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup in Latvia in 2021, Edey played for Canada.
With a tournament-high 14.1 rebounds, 2.3 blocks and 15.1 points per game on average, he helped his team win the bronze and was selected to the all-tournament team. Edey committed to playing for the Canadian senior men’s national team for three years on May 24, 2022.
Coach Jordi Fernández chose Edey, who will be the sole player from college to compete in the FIBA Basketball World Cup in 2023. They advanced to the quarterfinals on September 3, guaranteeing Team Canada’s place in the 2024 Summer Olympics—their first Olympics appearance since 2000.
In the third-place match, Canada defeated the US to win the bronze medal. This was Canada’s first-ever medal in the World Cup and their first-ever medal at a major international competition since the Summer Olympics in 1936.
