David Montgomery Injury: What Happened to the Detroit Lions Player?

David Montgomery Injury

David Montgomery had a great start in his first NFL season with the Detroit Lions for fantasy football. He did well in the first four games, ranking among the top 20 running backs and even landing in the top five twice. He’s been the main guy for the Lions in the running game, but the problem is he missed three games due to injury.

The Lions had a bye week recently, which means they didn’t play. This break was good for Montgomery because he had a rib injury. People who manage fantasy football teams hope he used this time to recover. We’ll know more about his condition based on how he practices this week.

The injury occurred in the second quarter when Montgomery took a screen pass and subsequently suffered an upper-body injury, later identified as a rib injury.

Detroit Lions Reporter Eric Woodyard shares a tweet:

The impact of this was immediately felt, as Montgomery is a crucial cog in the Lions’ machinery, known for his ability to gain yards and contribute to the passing game consistently.

Who Will Replace David Montgomery?

The Lions let go of experienced running back Devin Ozigbo and added linebacker Trevor Nowaske to the main roster from the practice squad. Ozigbo only had a few chances to run this season, gaining 5 yards in three games as he was mostly brought up from the practice squad.

In the recent victory against the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday, he played for two offensive snaps and seven special teams snaps. Nowaske, an undrafted free agent from Saginaw Valley State, joined the Lions. In 2022, he received first-team All-GLIAC honors.

When Will Montgomery’s Return?

Montgomery, who had a rib injury, is expected to play in Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers. He’s had four weeks to recover, and the Lions seem confident in his availability since they let go of another running back last Thursday.

It’s not clear how they’ll share the running duties, especially with rookie Jahmyr Gibbs performing well in Montgomery’s absence. Still, the veteran is likely to get a good number of carries, given his past performance with an average of 22 carries in the first four games of the season.
