What is Katie Richards’ Cause of Death?

On Thursday, November 2, 2023, Katie Richards, the Director of Student Success and Disability Services at Mayville State University, passed away in a car accident.

Her SUV swerved, flipped and passed through a T-intersection. The collision occurred approximately eight miles west of Reynolds, North Dakota, at the intersection of Eagle Avenue and Grand Forks County 25.

The incident created a hole that would be difficult to fill and sent shockwaves through the academic world. It is clear that the collision caused serious injuries that ultimately proved deadly.

How Did the Community React to Katie Richards’ Death?

The University of North Dakota community is in deep mourning, after the tragic and unexpected death of one of its cherished graduates and former women’s basketball great, Katie Richards. Mayville State University also shared a tribute to her in a Facebook post which is provided below:

What Work Did Katie Richards Do in Her Life?

Mayville State University’s Katie J. Richards, M.Ed. was more than just an employee. For many students, she served as a friend, mentor and counselor. She devoted her life to making sure every kid got the tools and assistance they required to achieve in her role as Director of Kid Success and Disability Services.

Richards was a trailblazer more than ten years ago when she was hired as an assistant and became one of the first women to coach boys basketball in North Dakota. She claimed at the time that a guys’ squad would be a better fit for her personality.

In addition, she was a high school and kindergarten team coach. Throughout her tenure at the institution, Katie won the hearts of many people with her warmth, compassion and steadfast commitment to her students as well as her love of the basketball game.

Katie, a former star in the UND women’s basketball program was a crucial member of the group that helped the school win national championships. Her outstanding abilities, strong work ethic and leadership on the court were crucial to those amazing wins.

The annals of UND sports history will always bear the imprint of Katie’s accomplishments as a student-athlete. Beyond her involvement in sports, Katie was a shining example of her dedication to her students’ welfare while she held the position of Director of Student Success and Disability Services at Mayville State University.

She was an inspiration to many, a tenacious supporter of accessibility and equality, and she made incalculable contributions to the university.
