On September 26, 1970, Richard Eugene Piana was born in Glendale, California. He was of Italian origin via his father and via his mother, Armenian. He was reared by his mother in Sacramento, California and at the age of six, he became fascinated with bodybuilding.
He used to attend the gym to see his mother get ready for competitions. She and “old-school” bodybuilder Bill Cambra had an impact on him. He started lifting weights at age eleven. He began bodybuilding competitions four years later. He lived in La Crescenta, California, with his father throughout his final year of high school.

He was the 1989 National Physique Committee (NPC) Mr. Teen California champion, the 1998 NPC Mr. California winner and the 2003 and 2009 NPC competition winners.
