Aaron Spears, a talented drummer known for playing with Usher, Ariana Grande, and other big pop stars, has passed away at the age of 47.
On Monday, his wife Jessica confirmed his death in a statement on his official Instagram account. Their son August also co-signed the statement. The message didn’t mention any details about other survivors, the time, place, or cause of death. Representatives for Spears could not be reached for comment on Monday night.
In 2004, he got a Grammy nod for producing Usher’s album “Confessions,” which sold over 15 million copies globally. The following year, Spears played drums at the Grammys for a mix of Usher’s “Caught Up” and James Brown’s “Sex Machine,” a performance that got attention in the drumming world.
Over time, Spears performed with various artists like Grande, Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, and Lil Wayne. The D.J., drummer and producer, said in an Instagram post on Monday, “You’ve seen Aaron drum prolly 5-10 times in your life if you attend concerts & sometimes without knowing. That’s how much in demand his services were.”
Aaron Spears was born on October 26, 1976, in Washington, D.C. He grew up in the Pentecostal faith and got into drumming because of his connection with the church. In an interview on the German show Drumtalk, he mentioned that as a kid, he used to sit on someone’s lap in church, playing the top part while they worked the pedals.
