Just before 8 p.m. on July 17, authorities pulled up a car driven by Lamar Bell close to the intersection of 10th Avenue and Kishwaukee Street.
According to Illinois State Police, Lamar Bell started displaying symptoms of a medical emergency connected to drug use during traffic at 10th Avenue and Kishwaukee Street. An ambulance took Bell to the hospital where he later died.
Is Lamar Bell’s Autopsy Revealed His Cause of Death?
Illinois State Police speculate that the man who died during a traffic stop in Rockford may have taken drugs. According to the Winnebago County Coroner’s Office, the autopsy did not show any traumatic injury to Bell and the cause of death is under investigation.
Nonetheless, the coroner’s autopsy report supports Bell’s consumption of narcotics. Additionally, according to state police during the traffic stop drugs were discovered inside Bell’s vehicle. Social media users were incensed at Bell’s passing and accused the Rockford Police Department of being complicit in it.
Prior to the Illinois State Police issuing a statement regarding Bell’s death, Rockford Police Chief Carla Redd confirmed to the Register Star that the department was not involved in that afternoon incident.
We have been made aware of inaccurate information being posted on social media regarding the death of Lamar Bell. RPD had no involvement in this incident.

There has been no release of information on the deceased and the Illinois State Police Division of Internal Investigation (DII) is still conducting its investigation. Recently the department shared some footage of that day during the traffic stop and below you will read about it.

What Did the Traffic Stop Video Show?
Troopers’ body camera footage from the Rockford traffic stop was made public by Illinois State Police three weeks after a Rockford man passed away due to a medical issue.
Three recordings of the traffic stop were made public by ISP: one was from the police body camera, another was from the squad car dashboard, and a third was from inside an ISP squad car.
ISP made the full video of the traffic stop involving Lamar Bell. According to the footage, the troopers discovered what seemed to be cocaine in Bell’s car. They located it in various places in the back seat, on the front seats and stuffed inside a package of toilet paper.
Bell started yelling that he needed an ambulance after being placed in the trooper’s front seat. In the end, he requested that police enforcement call his mother and pump his chest, as shown in the video. As rescue personnel arrive at the end of the video, Bell seems to become increasingly unresponsive.
The nearly hour-long body camera footage was made public on July 17, 2023. The video was made available, according to ISP in keeping with its “commitment to integrity and public transparency.”
ISP also showed video from Bell’s cell phone while he was being held in the police car. In a third video of the traffic stop, nearby residents are gathered around Bell and the officers, filming the incident with their phones and inquiring as to what is happening.
