Brais Méndez’s Journey in Professional Football
Méndez, a Galician native from Mos, Pontevedra joined RC Celta de Vigo’s development program in 2012 after leaving Villarreal CF. He started in a 1-0 Segunda División B away victory against Real Murcia on September 7, 2014, to make his senior debut.
On September 4, 2016, Méndez scored his first goal as a senior giving his club a 3-1 victory over CD Palencia. After playing the entire preseason with the starting lineup, he extended his contract until 2021 on August 21 of that year.
Méndez made his La Liga and professional debut on September 21 by beginning the 1-1 home draw with Getafe CF. On March 31, 2018, he scored his first goal in the competition tying a 1-1 away draw with Athletic Bilbao. Méndez extended his agreement until July 30, 2024.
His nine goals in the next season including both in a victory over Deportivo Alavés at Balados on December 20, were his most productive season to date. Real Sociedad and Celta agreed to the transfer of Méndez on July 6, 2022 and the player signed a contract through 2028 as part of the deal.
On September 8, he made his debut in the UEFA Europa League, defeating Manchester United at Old Trafford with the game’s lone goal thanks to a penalty. On September 20, 2023, in the group stage, Méndez also scored in his first game of the UEFA Champions League, setting up a 1-1 home tie with Inter Milan.
Méndez, who had previously represented Spain at the under-17, under-18 and under-21 levels was called up to the national squad for the first time on November 8 for games against Croatia and Bosnia & Herzegovina.
He made his debut in the latter game replacing Suso in the 59th minute of the 1-0 friendly victory at Las Palmas, where he also scored the game-winning goal.
