Why is Edgar Allan Poe Famous?

Edgar Allan Poe was an American writer, poet, author, editor and literary critic who is best known for his poetry and short stories, particularly his tales of mystery and the macabre.

He is widely considered as a key character in American literature, American Romanticism and American Gothic fiction. Poe was one of the nation’s first short story writers and is credited with creating the detective fiction subgenre.

He also made a substantial contribution to the development of the science fiction subgenre. He is the first well-known American author to only support himself via his writing which led to a financially challenging life and career.

He released his first book, Tamerlane and Other Poems, in 1827 after enlisting in the US Army under a false name and was only given the credit of “a Bostonian”. He had to travel between places because of his job including Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York City.

He released his poem “The Raven” in January 1845 to immediate popularity. He had long plans to publish The Penn which was eventually renamed The Stylus, his own journal. Poe had an impact on international literature as well as specialist subjects like cosmology and encryption.

He and his creations can be found in a variety of popular media including books, music, movies and television. His homes include a number of museums. An annual Edgar Award is given out by the Mystery Writers of America for outstanding work in the mystery genre.

The second child of English-born actress Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins Poe and American actor David Poe Jr., Edgar Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on January 19, 1809. Rosalie, his younger sister and Henry, his older brother were his siblings.

Around 1750, their great-grandfather David Poe left County Cavan, Ireland and immigrated to America. His mother passed away from pulmonary TB a year after his father abandoned the family in 1810.

Poe was next brought into the residence of John Allan, a prosperous trader in Richmond, Virginia who dealt in a wide range of products including fabric, wheat, tombstones, tobacco and slaves. Although they never legally adopted him, the Allans served as his foster parents and gave him the name “Edgar Allan Poe”.

Poe briefly attended the grammar school in Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland, where Allan was born, before rejoining the family in London in 1816 after the family’s 1815 sailing to the United Kingdom. Up until the summer of 1817, he attended a boarding school in Chelsea.

He was then enrolled in the Reverend John Bransby’s Manor House School in Stoke Newington, a neighborhood at the time that was located 6 kilometers (4 miles) north of London. In 1820, Poe returned to Richmond with the Allans.

He was the lieutenant of the Richmond youth honor guard in 1824, while the city was celebrating the Marquis de Lafayette’s visit. Before enrolling at the University of Virginia in February 1826 to study ancient and modern languages, Poe might have become engaged to Sarah Elmira Royster.

After sometime, Poe lost contact with Royster and she wed Alexander Shelton. He left for Boston in April 1827 supporting himself with odd jobs as a clerk and a newspaper writer and during this time, he began writing under the alias Henri Le Rennet. He did very hard work to reach at this stage but he suddenly left us.

At What Age Did Edgar Allan Poe Die?

Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809 and passed away on October 7, 1849 at the age of 40 years. Joseph W. Walker who discovered Poe reported that he was in great distress and in need of immediate assistance when he discovered him on October 3, 1849, in Baltimore.

He was carried to the Washington Medical College, where he passed away at five in the morning on Sunday, October 7, 1849.
