Halo’s Firefight mode has always been a big part of the series. It’s where you team up with friends to defend against AI-controlled enemies in waves. After the 2021 launch of Halo Infinite, fans have been wondering when they’d get to play this co-op mode again. Well, in season five, after two long years, it’s finally back.
In Halo Infinite’s Firefight, you team up with three others. Unlike past games where you only had to survive enemy waves, this time, you need to capture and protect a ‘King of the Hill’ area from the AI enemies. Here’s what you should know about playing this mode.
What is Firefight in Halo Infinite?
Halo Firefight is a PvE game mode in which Spartans have to take and protect hills from AI-controlled enemies. Players can pick how hard the game is before they start, which affects how tough the enemies are, how many there are, and what gear the players begin with.
In Firefight, enemies come in waves and try to find and defeat the human players. These waves have all the enemy types from the campaign, and sometimes, there are special boss waves with themed enemies, like Elite Brutes with super-strong Gravity Hammers.
After all the enemies are gone, players get strong weapons like the Rocket Launcher, special abilities like Active Camo, or more chances to keep playing before the next wave begins.
If any Spartans get defeated in Firefight, they come back to life after a little while. But if they run out of chances to come back, they stay out of the game until the wave is finished, or if all players are gone, the game ends.
In Halo Infinite, there’s something called Firefight King of the Hill. It’s like a twist on the regular game mode where Spartans have to take control of five hills from the Banished enemies and protect them, just like in the usual multiplayer mode.
In Infinite Firefight, the game will keep going until players either capture and keep all five hills or run out of lives. There’s no time limit for how long the match can last.
Some new stuff in Infinite Firefight includes being able to choose your starting equipment. In the early gameplay videos, Spartans have unlimited Grappleshot and Threat Sensor charges, just like in the campaign. Plus, players can now revive their teammates during a wave, which helps save respawns when things get tough.
If a fireteam finishes a wave without anyone getting knocked down, they’ll get a random Skull for the rest of the match. This makes each new wave even tougher as more challenging changes get added, and the enemy waves become stronger.
These Skulls come from the campaign and make things harder for the whole team. For instance, there’s one called Fog that turns off the motion sensor, another called Black Eye that makes shields recover only with successful melee hits, and also Thunderstorm, which makes players face tougher versions of each enemy.
Firefight King of the Hill will have nine maps you can play on. Three of these maps are made by the community. In the early gameplay, we’ve seen maps like Forest from the Arena and House of Reckoning from the campaign being used for Firefight.

Firefight King of the Hill Delayed in Halo Infinite Season 5
Right now, you can’t play Firefight King of the Hill in Halo Infinite because it doesn’t have its special place in the multiplayer menu.
