Gen V Episode 5 Recap
Being a college campus superhero satire, Gen V seamlessly incorporates age-appropriate narrative elements. In line with this, episode 5 delves into the classic “hangover” trope. It appears that the abrupt blackout at the conclusion of episode 4 was far from a mere editing oversight.
Marie, Cate, Andre, and Emma find themselves abruptly awakening in the aftermath of a wild party without any memory of the prior night’s events. In fact, their confusion extends to the entire week leading up to the party – a chaotic puzzle they’re struggling to piece together.
Once Sam, who hasn’t lost his memory, shows up at the party and starts chatting about The Woods, it leaves Marie and Emma quite baffled. So, the gang decides it’s time to figure out why they can’t remember anything.
They figure that Rufus, the telepath (played by Alexander Calvert), is the prime suspect, especially since Marie had something to do with an incident involving him. Meanwhile, Marie and Jordan’s romantic connection keeps growing as they join the search.
Marie eventually discovers something unusual in her neck using her blood-related abilities. She pulls it out and realizes it’s a tracking device. She wants to tell Cate about it, but Cate’s response is to erase Marie’s memory once again. Surprisingly, it turns out that Cate, their old friend, was the one behind this sneaky act, not Rufus!
Later on, Cate talks with Dean Shetty, who praises her for being a true hero by shielding her friends from the truth. Sam even confirms to Emma that Cate had wiped Luke’s memory in the past.
Speaking of Sam, he spends the episode in his hideout at the drive-in and takes down a group of armed soldiers (whom he imagines as puppets) in a very violent and spectacular manner. At the end of the episode, the gang uncovers the truth about Cate, and she tearfully says sorry.
She also gives Andre back the memories she had taken away before. It won’t be easy for Cate to rebuild the trust of her friends. We’ll find out in the next episode how she’ll try to do that, and we’ll see how Soldier Boy, of all people, plays a role in the story in episode 6.
