Kathleen Eyring Illness: Which Disease Was She Suffering From?

In Bountiful, Utah, on Sunday, October 15, 2023, Kathleen Johnson Eyring wife of President Henry B. Eyring, Second Counselor in the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints passed away peacefully. She was 82 years old at the time of death.

From Which Illness Was Kathleen Eyring Suffering From?

Kathleen was suffering from dementia a disorder associated with memory loss. President Eyring took care of Kathleen as her memory began to fail, frequently bringing her to his office where she could read and unwind while he was in a conference.

Although the condition was difficult for the family, they recall that as Kathleen grew older and her memory loss worsened. During her battle with memory loss she passed away suddenly. On social media, their loved ones have shared their sadness about Henry B. Eyring’s wife’s death.

Henry Eyring her grandson tweeted, “I wish everyone knew my grandma like I knew her. Love you, Grandma.”

Mike Lee wrote, “Sharon and I send our heartfelt condolences to President Eyring HB and his family on the loss of his beloved wife, Kathleen Johnson Eyring.”

Mary Richards tweeted, “I feel so sad, even knowing of eternal families. My heart goes out to President Henry B. Eyring after the death of his beloved wife.”

Tyler Clancy said, “My heart breaks for the Eyring family. What a beautiful example of eternal families. My wife and I are praying for the Eyrings & are forever grateful for Kathleen’s service.”

Kathleen’s Journey of Faith and Conviction

J. Cyril and LaPrele Lindsay Johnson welcomed Kathleen into the world on May 11, 1941 in San Francisco, California. Her family and friends remember her as a bubbly, vivacious young lady who loved life and excelled in both athletics and academics serving as the tennis team captain in high school, president of the student body and valedictorian.

Kathleen continued her studies after high school at the University of California, Berkeley, where her devotion to her convictions and witness of the gospel of Jesus Christ grew. A young Harvard student named Henry Bennion Eyring observed her at a devotional she attended in 1961 while she was attending summer school in Boston.

Kathleen devotedly performed numerous official Church duties including giving Sunday school classes, acting as a visiting teacher and creating a newsletter for her congregation for many years. She is also remembered for her quiet, less formal, but no less effective, ministry to others.

Throughout Henry’s career and Church service, Kathleen, a talented writer provided editorial advice. Later, she took official minutes for the monthly gatherings with the other spouses of General Authorities.

Kathleen also contributed to the co-publication of a monthly family newsletter, wrote scripts for family occasions and chronicled family recollections.
