It is with great we announce that Keith Giffen an American comics artist and writer passed away on October 9, 2023. He was known for his work for DC Comics on their Legion of Super-Heroes and Justice League titles as well as for being the co-creator of Lobo, Rocket Raccoon, and Jaime Reyes.
DC confirmed the news of his by sharing a tweet in which they wrote, “DC is saddened by the untimely passing of writer and artist Keith Giffen.”

Keith Giffen’s Journey From Legion to Justice League
Neil Giffen was born on November 30, 1952, in Queens, New York. A black-and-white text story called “The Sword and the Star” was his first piece of published work. Giffen is best known for his many years of drawing and then writing Legion of Super-Heroes in the 1980s and 1990s.
Levitz and Giffen released the third book in the Legion of Super-Heroes series in August 1984. Giffen planned and drew the Legion’s fourth book which came out in November 1989. In 1987, he made the funny Justice League International series with J. M. DeMatteis and Kevin Maguire.
Robert Loren Fleming, Giffen and Curt Swan worked together on a DC Comics Aquaman limited series and one-shot special in 1989. Some of the companies that hired Giffen to work on their projects were Woodgod, All Star Comics, Drax the Destroyer, Heckler, Nick Fury’s Howling Commandos, Reign of the Zodiac, Suicide Squad, Trencher, T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents and Vext.
From 1994 to 1995, he worked for Dark Horse on their Comics Greatest World/Dark Horse Heroes line. He wrote the last issue of Solar: Man of the Atom, X-O Manowar, Magnus, Robot Fighter, Punx and other comics for Valiant Comics.
Giffen took a break from making comics for a few years and worked on storyboards for movies and TV shows like “The Real Ghostbusters” and “Ed, Edd ‘n’ Eddy.”
From 2005 to 2007, he co-created and often wrote or co-wrote independent comics like 10, Tag and Hero Squared for Boom! Studios, Zapt! and I Luv Halloween for Tokyopop, Common Foe and Tabula Rasa for Desperado Publishing/Image Comics and Grunts for Arcana.
Giffen and J. M. DeMatteis worked together again on the Justice League 3000 series, which came out in October 2013. He wrote The New 52: Futures End with Jeff Lemire, Dan Jurgens and Brian Azzarello in 2014. Giffen and Dan DiDio worked together again that year on Infinity Man and the Forever People.
He and artist Jeff Lemire worked on a new series of “Inferior Five” in 2019. This series had nothing to do with the original superhero jokes from the 1960s, other than the name. Keith Giffen did a very hard in his life.
