The Early Influences: DJ Eric B.’s Musical Beginnings
Eric B. began deejaying at a roller rink with his younger brother and two other friends. He says that DJ Vernon, King Charles and Grandmaster Flash were some of his early inspirations. By 1985, Eric B. was a DJ at the New York radio station WBLS.
He was looking for a rapper to rap over his DJing, which is how he met Rakim. He had also thought about working with Freddie Foxxx, but he wasn’t able to get together with him before he joined forces with Rakim. Rakim and Eric B.’s first song, “Eric B. Is President,” came out in 1986.
Many people loved this album when it first came out and now it’s thought to be one of the best in hip-hop history. Eric B. has been praised for the martial and percussive sound and good use of samples on the album.
After three more songs, Eric B. and Rakim broke their record deal with MCA. Eric B. refused to sign the release contract because he was afraid Rakim would leave him. This started a long legal fight between him, Rakim and the label.
Because of this, the two broke up for good in 1992. After splitting up with Rakim, Eric B. put out one record by himself, called Eric B., in 1995. But he mostly worked as a producer and executive for Street Life Records, a now-defunct branch of Scotti Brothers Records.
After they stopped working together on music, Eric B. and Rakim stopped talking to each other, but in 2016, they got back in touch and stated that they were getting back together. The pair is working on remastering their albums and having concerts again, but they said they weren’t going to put out any new music.
