Buck Trent: The Multi-Talented Musician Who Left His Mark
Trent was born on February 17, 1938. He was raised in Spartanburg, South Carolina. At age 11, Trent began performing on Spartanburg radio stations WORD and WSPA. He visited Texas and California before coming to Nashville in 1959, where he joined the Bill Carlisle Show and made his Grand Ole Opry debut.
In addition to appearing on the Roy Clark Show and Hee Haw from 1974 to 1982, he was a member of Porter Wagoner’s “Wagon Masters” from 1962 to 1973 and Bill Monroe’s “Bluegrass Boys” from 1960 to 1961. He contributed to the songs “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You” by Dolly Parton.
On Marty Stuart’s album “Nashville, Vol. 1: Tear the Woodpile Down” from 2012, Buck appeared on two tracks. He has a long history and has been nominated for numerous accolades.
He and Roy Clark received the Country Music Association Instrumental Group of the Year award twice and he twice received the Music City Awards’ No. 1 Instrumentalist of the Year honor.
Trent’s other television appearances include The Marty Stuart Show, Country’s Family Reunion on RFD-TV, The Tonight Show, Nashville on the Road, Tommy Hunter Show, Command Performance, Music City Tonight, Nashville Now and Dinah in addition to The Porter Wagoner Show and Hee Haw.
Trent’s performance career also involved a lot of touring and in 1976, he traveled to the Soviet Union with Roy Clark. The first country music artist to visit the USSR was this one. He visited Branson, Missouri in the early 1980s when touring with the Porter Wagoner Show and had a performance at the Baldknobber’s Jamboree Theatre.
After performing at the Mickey Gilley Theatre in Branson, Missouri, as Mickey Gilley’s opener a few years later, he was the first national performer to begin a live music event there that was presented early in the morning in 1990.
As of November 2015, Trent’s morning performance in Branson, Missouri was known as Buck Trent Country Music performance and was presented at Baldknobbers Jamboree Theatre. His performance was moved to the Jim Stafford Theater in 2016.
He relocated to the Baldknobbers’ Famous Theatre in Branson in 2017. He was also well-known for his catchphrase, “Uh-huh, oh yeah,” which was a line he used in a spoof on Hee Haw.
