Sy Becker Obituary: What is His Cause of Death?
His friends and family members are deeply saddened after hearing the news of his death. They shared their condolences towards his family and paid tribute to him on social media. Chris Pisano said in a Facebook post that he passed away after a short illness.
Michelle Stevens posted on Facebook, “Sy Becker was a legend in the community, an icon of WWLP-22News and a friend. May you rest in peace.”

What Type of Person Was Sy Becker?
Sy Becker was always in his element when participating in the Holyoke St. Patrick’s Parade and taking in the applause of tens of thousands of his devoted followers.
He cherished activities whether it was participating in the parade, hosting the East Longmeadow Concert Series or hosting the Red Cross Hometown Heroes Celebration.
Sy, who was born in the Brooklyn borough in 1936, attended both the School of Radio and Television and the City College of New York. He began his broadcasting career in radio working at stations in Chicopee, Asheville, North Carolina and Dover.
As a general assignment reporter and a local theater and film critic, he joined 22News in 1979. He was like the Energizer Bunny—a dynamic force with a distinct voice and manner of delivery. Sy, who was never one to hide from the camera, starred in numerous iconic 22News advertisements.
Sy presented the infamous “Becker Bike Challenge” in 2009 during the Toys for Tots initiative. However, Sy will always be remembered for his film reviews. According to his own estimate, Sy saw almost 9,000 films in his lifetime and he always rated them.
He finally retired this past Spring after a long career that won’t soon be forgotten by his friends at 22News and his many fans in western Massachusetts.
