Very sad to hear that the @Braves family lost another key member of our early 80s team. Poco once threw out 11 straight base-stealers in spring training. With shoulder problems he became our go-to LH bat off the bench. #rippoco pic.twitter.com/hgJzmTu7Zj

A Look at Biff Pocoroba’s Journey
Pocoroba played for the Braves for his whole 10-year career. He first joined the team for 67 games in 1975. In 1977, he had his best season. In 113 games, he hit 290 with eight home runs and 44 RBIs.
The next year, he was picked as a substitute for the All-Star Game. In the last inning of the NL’s 7-3 win, he came in and caught partner Phil Niekro for the last out. After having shoulder trouble for a long time, Pocoroba was put on the bench and used as a pinch hitter in 1982.
He played in 56 games for Atlanta and hit. Atlanta started the season with a record 13 straight wins and went on to win the division title for the first time since 1969. In the NL Championship Series, the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Braves in three straight games.
Pocoroba’s only playoff game was Game 2, which he played as a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning of a 4-3 loss. Dale Murphy, a longtime teammate and two-time NL MVP who started out as a catcher and then moved to the outfield said that Pocoroba was a key member of our early ’80s team before injuries ended his career.
After just four games with the Braves early in the 1984 season, they let Pocoroba go. At age 30, he quit his job and started a second one as the owner of a specialty meat business in a neighborhood of Atlanta. At his death the team said in a statement:
“We are saddened to hear of the passing of former Braves catcher Biff Pocoroba, We share our deepest condolences to his family and friends.”
