Michelle Thomas was born on September 23, 1968 in Brookline, Massachusetts and she died at the age of 30 years on December 23, 1998.
Thomas received an uncommon cancer diagnosis in August 1997: an intra-abdominal desmoplastic small-round cell tumor. Thomas was a vegetarian and never smoked or drank alcohol. Just before winning her position on The Young and the Restless in the spring of 1998, Thomas had surgery to remove a tumor the size of a lemon.
After a second malignant tumor erupted in October 1998, she needed more surgery. Following her discharge from the hospital, Thomas took a flight back to New Jersey to celebrate Thanksgiving with her family in Weehawken.
Thomas passed away at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan on December 23. On December 26, 1998, a Muslim funeral service was held. She was buried in Montclair, New Jersey, near her home as confirmed by the post provided below:

Phynjuar “Penwah” Thomas, a stage actress, is her mother and musician father Dennis “Dee Tee” Thomas, a s_xophonist and founding member of the band Kool & the Gang is her father.
She used to go with her mother to her theatrical rehearsals and performances when she was younger. Her mother mentored her throughout her acting career and served as her first acting instructor. Michelle Thomas was asked to compete in Miss Talented Teens by a friend of her mother who had previously heard her sing.

Thomas played Theo Huxtable’s girlfriend Justine Phillips on The Cosby Show from 1988 to 1990. She made several television appearances including ones on Thea in 1994 and A Man Called Hawk in 1989. In 1989, Thomas appeared in Dream Date and in 1991, he played a supporting role in Hangin’ with the Homeboys.

Thomas took a medical leave of absence from the series in October 1998 because of her poor health. Before her dramatic change in health, Thomas had been in the recording studio creating music. In the 1999 movie Unbowed, she played Anne in a posthumous appearance.
