Frankie Lymon passed away on February 27, 1968 at the age of 25 years. The two songs Lymon had recorded for Big Apple before his death, “I’m Sorry” and “Seabreeze,” were released later in 1969.

Lymon was found dead of a heroin overdose on February 27, 1968, at the age of 25, on the floor of his grandmother’s bathroom with a syringe by his side. Lymon was buried at Saint Raymond’s Cemetery in the Throggs Neck neighborhood of The Bronx, New York City.

Who are the Family Members of Frankie Lymon?

Howard and Jeanette Lymon welcomed Lymon into the world on September 30, 1942, in Washington Heights, New York City. Jeanette worked as a cleaner, while Howard was a truck driver.

Both performed with the gospel ensemble The Harlemaires; Frankie, his brothers Lewis and Howie, as well as their fourth brother, Timmy, sung with the Harlemaire Juniors.

At age 10, Lymon started working as a grocery boy because his family was having financial difficulties. In 1954, when Lymon was 12 years old, he attended a school talent competition and heard the Coupe De Villes, a local doo-wop group.

He made friends with the band’s main vocalist, Herman Santiago and finally joined the ensemble which was now known as both The Premiers and The Ermines. He is the lead singer of the New York City-based early rock and roll doo-wop group The Teenagers.

There were five boys in the group and they were all in their early to mid-teens. Frankie Lymon, Jimmy Merchant, and Sherman Garnes were the only members of the Teenagers who were not black. Joe Negroni and Herman Santiago were the only members of the group who were Puerto Rican.

The Teenagers’ first song, “Why Do Fools Fall in Love” from 1956 was also their biggest hit. After Lymon went solo in the middle of 1957, both his and the Teenagers’ careers went downhill.
