Actor Sir Ian Murray McKellen CH CBE (born 25 May 1939) is from England. Over the course of more than six decades, he has played a wide variety of characters in film and theater, from Shakespearean dramas and contemporary theater to fan favorites in the realms of fantasy and science fiction.
In 1991, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his contributions to British culture. He has been nominated for two Academy Awards, five BAFTA Awards, and five Emmy Awards, and has won a Golden Globe and six Olivier Awards.
In 1961, McKellen made his debut on stage as a member of the Belgrade Theatre’s repertory company. McKellen’s debut performance on the West End stage was in 1965. He joined the Prospect Theatre Company in 1969 when he was cast as Richard II and Edward II by Shakespeare and Marlowe, respectively.
