Andrea, her mother was a musician and civil rights advocate. Her mother was a Catholic and her father came from a German-Jewish family. Her maternal grandmother, Ofelia Oliete also known as “Chibie” was a Catholic originating from Cuba and was of Pardo background, a freed-slave descendant.

Her maternal grandpa, Friedrich Heinemann was of German descent. Up until the age of 16, Ofelia was mostly raised by nuns in England. Simon was reared in the Riverdale section of the Bronx.

Simon developed a terrible stutter when she was eight years old. Simon attended Sarah Lawrence College for at least four semesters while also attending Riverdale Country School. She went to the Juilliard School of Music as well.
