Ashley Judd is an American actress. She was born into a performing arts family and is the half-sister of Wynonna Judd and the daughter of country music performer Naomi Judd.

Ashley Judd was born on April 19, 1968 in Granada Hills, Los Angeles and now she is 55 years old. Her parents are Michael Charles Ciminella, a marketing expert for the horse racing industry and Naomi Judd, a motivational speaker and former country music singer.

Ashley’s paternal grandmother was a distant descendant of Mayflower passenger William Brewster, while her paternal grandpa was of Sicilian (Italian) ancestry. Judd was four years old when her parents separated in 1972.

From Where Did Ashley Judd Get Education?

The Sayre School in Lexington, Kentucky, Paul G. Blazer High School in Ashland, Kentucky and Franklin High School in Tennessee were among the 13 schools Judd attended before going to college.

During a school break, she tried modeling in Japan for a short time. She majored in French while minoring in anthropology, art history, drama and women’s studies at the University of Kentucky. She became a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. As part of her major, Judd spent a semester studying abroad in France.

She earned an honors degree from the University of Kentucky and received a Phi Beta Kappa nomination. Judd relocated to Hollywood after graduating from college and studied acting at Playhouse West under the tutelage of Robert Carnegie.

She was living in a Malibu rental home and working as a hostess at The Ivy restaurant during this time. She later moved back to Williamson County, Tennessee, where she resided close to her mother and sister at about that time.

When did Ashley Judd Make His First Appearance on Screen?

Judd made his first appearance as Ensign Robin Lefler, a Starfleet officer in the episodes “Darmok” and “The Game” of Star Trek: The Next Generation beginning in 1991. She played Reed, Alex’s daughter in the NBC drama Sisters from 1991 until 1994.

She had a minor role in 1992’s Kuffs, her first appearance in a major picture. She was chosen to portray the title part in Victor Nuez’s Ruby in Paradise which was released in 1993, in her first leading role.

She was chosen to star in Natural Born Killers by Oliver Stone after he saw Judd in Nuez’s movie. Later, her scenes were removed from the theatrical release of the movie.  She portrayed Callie in Philip Ridley’s dark adult fairy tale The Passion of Darkly Noon.

She co-starred as Marilyn Monroe in the 1996 film Norma Jean and Marilyn with Mira Sorvino, recreating the centerfold picture session for the inaugural Playboy magazine. She appeared in the thriller A Time to Kill the same year in a minor role.

It was a huge box office hit and earned favorable reviews. By the end of the 1990s, Judd had established herself as a major actress, playing the lead in a number of successful thrillers such as Kiss the Girls and Double Jeopardy.

She appeared in Where the Heart Is, Someone Like You and High Crimes in the early 2000s. These were only marginal box office winners. The performance in her 2002 film Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood was positive. She appeared in the widely praised movie Frida in 2002.

In 2004, she was praised for her work in the movie De-Lovely with Kevin Kline who played Cole Porter and garnered a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress. She played Rebecca Winstone in the ABC drama Missing in 2012.

She had an appearance as Natalie Prior in Divergent in 2014, a role she carried over into the 2015 follow-up Insurgent. In 2014, Terry Spencer Hesser’s documentary Love Is a Verb which was about the Turkish cleric Fethullah Gülen included Judd as its narrator. She was the first woman to narrate the Kentucky Derby telecast’s opener the following year.
