How Did the Incident Happen?
Due to excessive speeding and reckless driving, North Bergen Police Officer Jon Nunez pulled down a 2022 Kia Stinger at 61st Street at 1:49 AM on August 4, 2021. He made contact with the driver and the passenger, who were identified as Alexis Rodriguez and Luis Fernando Cevallos.
Alexis said that they were going on their first date. Being stressed about the time to get home, she took the blame for his reckless driving. Officer Nunez explained to Alexis that it was not her fault and Luis was issued three fines for driving carelessly, disobeying a flashing traffic light and violating the provisions of a provisional license.
Before letting Luis depart, Officer Nunez warned him to drive carefully to prevent a fatal collision. The traffic stop ended at 2:02 AM. Around 2:13 AM, Officer Jessica Toro overheard Officer Nunez talking on the radio about a tractor-trailer accident.
As he approached the accident scene, which was located close to the Paterson Plank Road flyover on Tonnelle Avenue, he noticed the identical car that he had just stopped a short while before.
They reportedly struck a 2021 Volvo tractor-trailer that had positioned itself across all four lanes of the road for an early morning delivery to a local business while moving south on Tonnelle Avenue at a significantly high speed.
He saw the Kia Stinger’s passengers appeared to be dead and immediately requested a crash team to investigate a fatal collision. Even though it was clear that the driver was Luis Fernando Cevallos, Officer Kevin Rodriguez looked through Alexis Rodriguez’s bag to find out who she was.
This is due to the fact that during the traffic stop, Officer Nunez did not ask Alexis for her identification. Officers Rodriguez, Perez, Vitali, Sloan and Sergeants Schubert and Yousef were on the scene shortly after. ALS Unit 476 and North Bergen EMS South both showed up on the spot.
A doctor on the scene pronounced the driver and passenger of the car dead at 2:26 AM. You can see the full video of that day to know more about the situation.
What Was the Truck Driver’s Statement Regarding the Incident?
While Officer Nunez was gathering paperwork from the truck driver and getting his version of events, the driver acknowledged that he was backing into 36th Street to make a delivery at the loading dock of Pat LaFrieda Meat Purveyors.
He was unnecessarily backing in when the southbound Kia Stinger smashed into his tractor-trailer. Officer Vitali eventually transported the truck driver to the police department’s main office so that he could make a voluntary statement.
At around 2:45 AM, Officer Suarez and Detective Mena arrived at the location to begin their inquiry. Sergeant Ragland from the Hudson County Prosecutors’ collision section arrived at the scene at 3:37 AM.
A medical examiner’s investigator arrived at the scene at 5:35 AM and both bodies were exhumed around 6:10 AM. The Kia Stinger was removed at 6:30 AM, and the road was reopened at 6:45 AM. Detective Mena returned to Tumino’s Towing at 1:00 PM with Secaucus Police Lieutenant Martin Moreda, a member of the Hudson County Regional Crash Team.
By 7:00 PM, Lieutenant Moreda had determined that for the five seconds prior to contact, the Kia Stinger had been traveling at a speed of 124 MPH (181.784 feet per second). At the moment of the collision, the Kia Stinger was driving at a speed of 68 MPH (99.688 feet per second).
On August 24, 2021, the detective came to the conclusion that the fatal incident would not have happened if the driver had been going the posted speed limit as opposed to 124 MPH.
