On August 4, 2021, at 1:49 AM, North Bergen Police Officer Jon Nunez pulled down a 2022 Kia Stinger on 61st Street due to excessive speeding and reckless driving.
He made contact with the driver and the passenger, who were later identified as Alexis Rodriguez and Luis Fernando Cevallos. Alexis said that they were going on their first date. Being stressed about the time to get home, she took the blame for his reckless driving.
Officer Nunez explained to Alexis that it was not her fault and Luis was issued three fines for driving carelessly, disobeying a flashing traffic light and violating the provisions of a provisional license. Before letting Luis depart, Officer Nunez warned him to drive carefully to prevent a fatal collision.
The traffic stop ended at 2:02 AM. Around 2:13 AM, Officer Jessica Toro overheard Officer Nunez talking on the radio about a tractor-trailer accident.
As he approached the accident scene, which was located close to the Paterson Plank Road flyover on Tonnelle Avenue, he noticed the identical car that he had just stopped a short while before.
They reportedly struck a 2021 Volvo tractor-trailer that had positioned itself across all four lanes of the road for an early morning delivery to a local business while moving south on Tonnelle Avenue at a significantly high speed.
He saw the Kia Stinger’s passengers appeared to be dead and immediately requested a crash team to investigate a fatal collision. Alexis Rodriguez’s identity was sought by Officer Kevin Rodriguez despite it being obvious that the driver was Luis Fernando Cevallos.
This is due to the fact that during the traffic stop, Officer Nunez did not ask Alexis for her identification. Officers Rodriguez, Perez, Vitali, Sloan, and Sergeants Schubert and Yousef were on the scene shortly after.
ALS Unit 476 and North Bergen EMS South both showed up on the spot. A doctor on the scene pronounced the driver and passenger of the car dead at 2:26 AM. You can see the full video of that day to know more about the situation.
