JoAnne A. Epps was a well-known American law professor, legal author and temporary president of Temple University. We are deeply saddened to share with you that she suddenly passed away on September 19, 2023.
What Happened to Joanne Epps?
JoAnne A. Epps passed away on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, after getting sick on stage during a funeral service. She was 72 years old at the time of death.
Epps got sick at the memorial service for Charles L. Blockson, who died in June and was the director emeritus of the Blockson Afro-American Collection at Temple. The Philadelphia Inquirer said that Epps, who was supposed to talk at the service, fell asleep in her chair soon after it started.
When the host asked if there was a doctor in the room, she was carried out by a uniformed officer. Epps was taken to Temple University Hospital, where around 3:15 p.m. she was declared dead.

In a statement posted on the school’s website, Mitchell L. Morgan, chair of the school’s board of trustees, Ken Kaiser, senior vice president and chief operating officer and Gregory N. Mandel, senior vice president and provost, said:
“There are no words that can describe the gravity and sadness of this loss. President Epps was a devoted servant and friend who represented the best parts of Temple.”
They added:
“She spent nearly 40 years of her life serving this university, and it goes without saying her loss will reverberate through the community for years to come.”
Mandel claimed that after enrolling at the school in 2007, he and Epps grew close and that she served as a mentor for both them and other students. He said:
“This a tragic loss, but we know that JoAnne passed away doing something that she loved.”
