Shapiro was born in Delmar, New York, to observant Jews. She married a Jew and became a Jew as a result of his influence on her religious beliefs. It has been reported by The Jewish News that she considers herself to be a “Jew by choice.”

Juju Chang Journey From Receptionist to Award-Winning Journalist
In 1984, Chang started working as a receptionist for ABC. In 1991, she began her career as a producer and off-air reporter for ABC World News Tonight, where she mostly worked on developing coverage of live events and stories for the “American Agenda” program. She covered the 1991 Gulf War and the 1992 U.S. presidential election behind the scenes for many news organizations while based in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia.
In 1995, she won an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award for her work on a series about women’s health for World News Tonight.
