Harry Maguire’s Journey From Sheffield Youth to World Stage
Maguire was born in South Yorkshire’s Sheffield and was brought up in Mosborough, a neighbouring community. Joe and Laurence, two of his brothers are also football players.
He went to St. Mary’s Roman Catholic High School in Chesterfield and Immaculate Conception Catholic Primary School in Spinkhill. Maguire was a central midfielder for the Sheffield United youth from the age of 7 to 16.
Before making the transition to the first team in 2011, Maguire was a product of Sheffield United’s development program. He made 166 games for United and won the club’s Player of the Year award three times in a row. He also frequently appeared in the PFA League One Team of the Year.
He moved to Hull City for £2.5 million in 2014 and in 2015, he was on loan to Wigan Athletic. He paid an initial cost of £12 million to join Leicester City in 2017 and during the 2017–18 campaign, he played every minute and was voted Player of the Season.
Maguire joined Manchester United in 2019 for an alleged £80 million transfer fee, a record sum for a defender. Within six months of his arrival, he was named club captain, a position he retained until July 2023.
In 2012, Maguire participated in one game for the England under-21 national team. He made his senior debut in 2017 and was selected for England’s squads for the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups as well as the UEFA Euro 2020, where he was named to the Tournament Team.
