People are deeply saddened after hearing the news of his death. They shared tributes towards him on social media. Molly Elizabeth writes, “Marc Bohan, Dior’s longest-serving designer, passed away on September 6th at the age of 97.”

Marc Antoine Coulon tweeted, “RIP Marc Bohan.”

Christina Binkley wrote, “Marc Bohan has died. Longtime designer of Christian Dior, in the real haute couture days.”

Elinor Sachs tweeted, “Rest in Peace Marc Bohan.”

Bohan, who was born in Paris on August 22, 1926, showed an early aptitude for painting and fashion and his mother, a well-known local hatmaker, supported him in his endeavours. He started working for Dior in 1957, designing collections for the brand out of its London headquarters.

Bohan rose quickly through the ranks of Dior as well, taking over the position of artistic director in 1961 when Yves Saint Laurent was called to active duty.

Bohan played a significant role in the introduction of the ready-to-wear lines “Miss Dior,” “Baby Dior” and “Dior Monsieur” which were designed for women, children and men, respectively.

He also worked on numerous collections as artistic director, a position he held until 1989 when he left to work at the British fashion house Norman Hartnell. The “De d’Or” or “Golden Thimble” is a famous French high fashion award and he received it twice for his work in 1983 and 1988.

Bohan furthered his legacy by dressing Iran’s Empress Farah during the shah’s coronation in 1967. First Lady Jackie Kennedy was so enamoured with Farah’s appearance that she ordered her own designer to emulate Bohan’s fashion sense.

Along with creating theatrical costumes to indulge his passion for both opera and theatre, he was good friends with writer Francoise Sagan and artist Niki de Saint Phalle.
