‘Smash Mouth’ lead vocalist Steve Harwell has only a matter of days to live, according to the band’s manager, who verified the news on Sunday (3 Sep) that hospice care has begun at home. The 56-year-old singer was recently hospitalized for treatment in the final stages of liver failure. Musician ‘has been suffering with alcohol misuse throughout his life — and he’s reached the ultimate stage of liver failure,’ manager said.
The team has declined to comment further and has asked that supporters “respect Steve and his family’s privacy during this difficult time.”
What Happened To Smash Mouth Lead Singer?
Steve stated that he would be retiring in 2021 and relinquishing his role as host of ‘Smash Mouth.’ The singer’s representative had previously disclosed that the performer was afflicted with cardiomyopathy and heart failure. Steve’s health began to decline in 2015, although he didn’t announce his retirement from the band until later. He was also suffering from Wernicke’s encephalopathy, a disorder that hinders motor skills, in addition to his other illnesses. He has also had problems with drugs in the past.

Steve’s resignation was announced after he was caught on camera at the 2021 Big Sip Festival in New York slurring his lines and giving the middle finger to the audience.
In a statement released after his retirement, Harwell said, “Ever since I was a kid, I dreamed of being a rock star, performing in front of sold-out arenas, and have been so fortunate to live out that dream.” I really wanted to play for you one more time, but between my physical and mental condition, it was impossible for me to do so.
Steve has had a lot of health problems over the past few years. In 2016, he collapsed on stage while performing in Urbana, Illinois, and had to be hospitalized. Due to respiratory difficulties during a sound check prior to a performance in Memphis, Tennessee, many of his scheduled performances had to be rescheduled the next year.
