When she was eliminated in the first round at Wimbledon, she took comfort in Jimmy’s good sportsmanship and set her sights on the US Open. That’s a new perspective I’ve adopted in the past few weeks.”
“Him and my mom spoke for a long time when he was here. …He was like, yeah, he can really see the joy in me again in playing and enjoying the competition, and that I should continue to do that,” Gauff said. “I learned a lot watching him, everybody counting him out. … You have people that are talented and don’t have the mentality. He has the talent and the mentality.
The family-like bond among the players was highly valued by the 19-year-old tennis phenom as well. When he was here, he and my mom had a long conversation…Gauff explains that the doctor told him he should keep playing since he can “really see the joy in me again” when he competes. I picked up a lot by just watching him, with everyone writing him off. There are talented folks who just don’t have it in them to succeed. He is both talented and mentally capable.
Gauff said of tennis GOAT Serena Williams, “a little bit less pressure in a way because she is the greatest player of all time.” She insists, though, that she has “no intention of following in those footsteps.” However, it is in my best interest to improve myself and achieve my full potential.

Next up for Coco Gauff at the US Open is 32nd-seeded Elise Mertens. Mertens has already shown her resiliency at the event by fending off three match points in her first-round match against Mirjam Bjorklund.
In the second round, she met 2022 Australian Open finalist Danielle Collins, who presented a similar challenge. It ended 3-6, 7-6 (7), 6-1, with Mertens saving two match points in the second set tie-break.
