Jack Sonni, famed for his role as the guitarist for Dire Straits, has passed away at 68. The band Dire Straits Legacy, who he had been touring with, confirmed the news. Members of the Legacy Facebook page have expressed sadness at his passing. The announcement and a photo of Sonni were also posted to the band’s official Instagram account with the comment “Rest in Peace.”

During the recording of 1985’s “Brothers in Arms,” Sonni became a member of Dire Straits and contributed to songs like “Money for Nothing.” In his characteristic red costume, he played a vital role in the band’s live performances. The band Dire Straits Legacy claims that he was unable to play in upcoming shows due to health concerns, while the cause of his death is unknown.
Sonni’s dedication to music was on full display in his evolution from New York City’s The Leisure Class to the legendary Dire Straits. Because of his connection with Mark and David Knopfler, he was invited to join the band. He went on to pursue a career in marketing after the band broke up, but he never forgot his time spent onstage with famous guitarists.

Jack Sonni’s Profession
Jack Sonni’s life took a significant turn once he graduated from college and met Elliott Randall, the New York studio guitarist whose solo is included on the hit song “Reelin’ In the Years.” This introduction was made possible by keyboardist Michael Holmes, and the resulting mentorship encouraged Sonni to move to New York City and launch his music career. He lived in New York City from 1976 to 1985, first trying to make it as a studio musician and then concentrating on his band, The Leisure Class.

Sonni’s band rose to notoriety in the late ’70s, when they began performing regularly at Kenny’s Castaways in New York City’s Greenwich Village. Working at Alex Music and afterwards at Rudy’s Music Stop deepened his ties to the music business. Rudy’s was when he first met David and Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits.
