Director David Ayer discusses a creative choice he wishes he hadn’t made in the 2016 DC picture Suicide Squad.  Ayer suggested that Jared Leto, who played the villainous Joker in the film adaptation of the comic book, get the word “damaged” tattooed across his forehead.

“The tattoo concept is entirely mine. “I made the decision,” Ayer wrote on X, the social media site that replaced Twitter. The initial concept was that “Blessed” would replace “Damaged.” Having said that, he continued, “I do regret that choice. It stoked hostility and partition. Not every thought you have is a good one. And while the internet smacks me around for this post, I’ll go stand over here.

On social media, Ayer recently hinted that his version of the picture, which also stars Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Will Smith as Deadshot, and Viola Davis as Amanda Walker, would be released in the future.

“Many people are interested. And I know there’s another subset that enjoys poking fun at the movie,” Ayer wrote on X. “Your remark exemplifies how many people are drawn like a magnet to talk about the 2016 film in a negative way. Have you ever gone through something that didn’t turn out the way you hoped it would, something that dragged you down and made you question everything? I have.”

He went on, “All I know is my unseen film plays much better than the studio release.” There appears to be a genuine and natural curiosity about my cut. And Gunn assured me that the information would eventually be made public. He should be allowed to start his DC universe without any further complications with previous works. I feel like I’m tethered to it. I’m hanging on like a tiger and making my way through this. The journey of life is an unusual one.
