Musical life without A&M Records is unimaginable. We are all so fortunate that @HerbAlpert & Jerry Moss did imagine it & then make it a real & magical place on the old Charlie Chaplin Lot. #RIPJerryMoss pic.twitter.com/nNCNvH8ydD

I’m so very sad to see that Record Executive Jerry Moss has died…Jerry was very kind to me when I had a record deal with ALMO SOUNDS which was the label he had with Herb Alpert after A&M Records. After I was dropped from the label, Jerry still gave me $ to make another album! pic.twitter.com/iTSYILdIvn

Alpert and Moss oversaw one of the most successful independent labels for nearly 25 years, publishing classics like Alpert’s “Whipped Cream & Other Delights,” Carole King’s “Tapestry” and Peter Frampton’s “Frampton Comes Alive!” The Go-Gos, Sheryl Crow and Joe Cocker all called them home at one point, as did the Carpenters, Cat Stevens, Janet Jackson and Soundgarden.
Alpert’s “A Taste of Honey,” the Captain & Tennille’s “Love Will Keep Us Together,” Frampton’s “Show Me the Way,” and the Police’s “Every Breath You Take” are all singles released under the label.
As a result of his musical ties, he and his second wife, Ann Holbrook ran a successful horse racing operation. The label’s first big hit was an instrumental by Alpert titled “The Lonely Bull” and it cost $35,000 to print 350,000 copies.
