What did Robbie Say About the “Barbie” Movie?

With the help of her company, Robbie created Barbie in addition to the Oscar-winning Promising Young Woman and Birds of Prey. She chose Greta Gerwig to helm the film and collaborated on the writing with Gerwig’s real-life partner Noah Baumbach.

Robbie initially wanted Gal Gadot to play Barbie, but Gerwig persuaded her to accept the role. Robbie told in an interview:

“It wasn’t that I ever wanted to play Barbie or dreamt of being Barbie or anything like that. This is going to sound stupid, but I really didn’t even think about playing Barbie until years into developing the project.”

Robbie said she pitched Barbie as a movie with a $1 billion potential before the film hit its box office milestone just over two weeks after its debut. She said:

“I think my pitch in the green-light meeting was the studios have prospered so much when they’re brave enough to pair a big idea with a visionary director.”

She cited the 1993 film Jurassic Park which started a franchise as an example of naming anything that’s been incredible and made a ton of money for the studios over the years. She joked in the interview:

“And I was like, And now you’ve got Barbie and Greta Gerwig. And I think I told them that it’d make a billion dollars, which maybe I was overselling, but we had a movie to make, okay?”

This summer, Christopher Nolan’s three-hour historical drama Oppenheimer and the internet movement known as “Barbenheimer” challenged fans to see both films which resulted in Barbie reviving the movie theatre industry. The two movies debuted in theatres over the same weekend broke attendance records.

Barbie is more than a movie, it’s an experience and the movie is in theaters now.
