Sheila Oliver, the lieutenant governor of New Jersey passed away on August 1, 2023, after hospitalization for an unspecified medical condition. Governor Phil Murphy said shared condolences towards her family and friends in a tweet provided below.

Chris Christie, a former governor of New Jersey and candidate for president in the Republican party, tweeted about Oliver’s passing as well.
It is a sad day for NJ and for me personally. The passing of Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver is a loss for our state. I will miss Sheila. She served as Speaker in my first term and we treated each other with kindness and respect. We got things done. She was a great person and partner.

Was Sheila Oliver Married?
Sheila Y. Oliver, a former lieutenant governor of New Jersey, kept her marital status a secret throughout her political career. She has never been married, according to her social media account.
She remained committed to serving the people of New Jersey and dismantling obstacles for minorities and women in politics during her time as lieutenant governor. People all around the state respected and admired her for her commitment to public service and multiple successes.
She made history as a pioneering politician, becoming the first Black woman to hold the post of Lieutenant Governor in New Jersey and the first person of colour to be elected to statewide office. Despite her early departure, she will always be regarded as a trailblazing figure in New Jersey politics.
