Randall Hank Williams is an American singer-songwriter and musician better known by his stage name Hank Williams Jr. or Bocephus. Although he is well known for donning a beard and sunglasses, the explanation for why he does so is almost hard to accept. His most recent Instagram post detailed the reality of what actually happened to him.
What Happened to Hank Williams Jr. 48 Years Ago?
His career in the music business went off without a hitch. However, one day while on vacation with one of his friends, Dick Willey his life was completely turned upside down.
Hank Williams Jr., a famed country music performer, survived a mountain fall 48 years ago. When Hank posted a photo to Instagram to mark the occasion, we were made aware of this incident.
The post’s caption reads, “48 years ago today 530 feet and 17 operations later this picture says it all. I am a very blessed and thankful man. HWJR.”
Hank’s friend Dick Willy, who was present when he fell described the incident to 20/20 in 1987. The two were “crossing this snow field” while they were trekking around Ajax Lake in Montana. He slipped and plunged 500–700 feet at an elevation of about 9,000 feet.
Additionally, Hank stated, “There was a sharp boulder up and it did the job, right between the old eyes.” In his autobiography, Living Proof: The Hank Williams Story Hank described the consequences. He wrote:
“I put my hands up to feel my nose. Where my nose should be there’s nothing there. My teeth and parts of my jaw fall out in my hand. I raise my hand to my forehead, and where my forehead should be, there’s something soft and squishy. That’s my brain, I think.”
According to Dick, the fall blew a hole in his forehead and tore his eye and nose off. Hank also suffered damage to his jaw, teeth and gums. According to Hank’s caption, he had 17 surgery over the years and concealed the scars with his recognizable glasses and beard.
When Hank woke up, he wrote:
“When I fell, there were only two people I saw when I woke up in the hospital bed and that was Johnny (Cash) and June (Carter Cash). June put a cross on me and told me it was all going to be OK. I never knew if I would sing again or not, talk again or not, let alone think about what I was going to look like. It was a scary time.”
Since his injuries were so severe, the doctors informed Ank that he was “born again” and that he should pursue his calling, he said. And he succeeded in doing so, going on to become one of the greatest country music artists ever. What a marvel, in truth.

Nevertheless, Hank Williams Jr. was so dedicated to his job that he intended to undergo a number of procedures just to be able to cover up the traumatizing scars of the occurrence. Years later, he was still able to perform in front of an audience and he even released more music for his followers to enjoy.
The wounds from his past experience have nonetheless had an impact on his distinctive appearance even though he now conceals them with sunglasses and a lengthy beard.
