On the evening of July 29, Sibley was killed in an assault in Brooklyn. At a gas station, he and his companions had been dancing. They can be seen dancing and grinning while pumping gas.

A group began shouting homophobic epithets at the group ordering them to cease dancing in the footage. A confidential witness… did hear that defendant and the defendant’s associates use homophobic slurs towards a group of approximately five men and state in sum and substance, “Stop dancing here, we are Muslim, get that get s— out of here.”

A few minutes later, Sibley was stabbed during a violent altercation. TizzyEnt shared a tweet for the justice of O’Shae Sibley in which he shared some information about the incident.

A 17-year-old boy was named as the culprit in the stabbing, who handed himself into police on August 4, 2023, and was subsequently charged with second-degree murder as a hate crime.

O’Shea Sibley was building a career for himself in New York as a professional dancer, but his farewell was in Philadelphia, where he was born and raised. His loved ones gathered to bid goodbye as Sibley’s tragedy continues to raise awareness of hate crimes against the LGBTQ+ community.

The funeral ceremony was place at The Met on North Broad Street on Tuesday, August 8, 2023 morning. The event was billed as “The Grand Finale of O’Shae Leon ‘Sage’ Sibley” on the program distributed to participants.

How did the Community Pay Tribute to O’Shae Sibley at the Funeral?

The attack has attracted attention from all across the world including pop icon Beyoncé who paid tribute to Sibley on her websiteA proclamation honoring him was made by the City of Philadelphia and hundreds of people showed out for the funeral and pay their tributes.

At Sibley’s funeral, a message was delivered opposing that hatred. Sibley’s first dance instructor, Karen Still Pendergrass and Otis Pea who was good friends with Sibley while they both lived in New York spoke to the mourners.

The front rows of the audience were occupied by Sibley’s family, many of whom were wearing blue and white clothing. Some of them were sporting t-shirts with the name and image of Sibley. Philadanco! gave a dance performance in memory of the 28-year-old.

Sibley developed his skills in the dance company before moving to New York City. To aid his family, Philadanco! established a GoFundMe page. Additionally, the business established a scholarship in his honor.

In Philadelphia, there were representatives from the district attorney’s office in New York. They refused to comment on the situation but did tell Action News that they were there to support Sibley’s family.

On Facebook, one user wrote, “O’Shae was a cherished and devoted Ailey Extension student. He had incredible energy in the studio and was loved by instructors and fellow classmates.”

Malik James said, “Justice for O’Shae Sibley.”
