After being found guilty of felony charges for shooting and hurting hip-hop star Megan Thee Stallion in the feet, Tory Lanez could get a long jail sentence at his sentencing on Monday. Los Angeles officials want Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson and is 31 years old, to get 13 years in prison.
In a document about Lanez’s sentencing, they said that in addition to the crimes for which he was convicted, he had re-traumatized Megan by posting about the case on social media, which gave many of his more than 2 million fans the courage to attack her.
Megan could go to court on Monday to give a statement about how the crime affected her or she could have one read for her. In a letter about Lanez’s sentence, his lawyers said that he should only get probation and be let out of jail to go to a residential program for people who use drugs.
They say that the proof that led to his conviction was “questionable at best” and that his lack of regret should not be taken into account when he is sentenced. The memo says that if the accusations were true, drinking and bad experiences as a child would be issued.
Lanez is in jail because a Los Angeles jury found him guilty of three felonies in December: assault with a semiautomatic firearm, having a loaded, unregistered firearm in a car, and firing a firearm with gross negligence.
The reading of the decision turned into a dramatic and chaotic scene when Lanez’s father jumped up in the gallery and criticized the “wicked system” that put his son in jail. He was dragged out of the courtroom by deputies as Lanez fans yelled that the case was unfair. The sentencing will take place on a floor with a higher level of protection than the trial.
During the trial, Megan said that in the summer of 2020, Lanez shot the gun at the back of her feet and told her to dance as she moved away from the SUV they were in. The party had been at Kylie Jenner’s house in Hollywood Hills. On May 9, Lanez’s lawyers asked for a new trial, but Superior Court Judge David Herriford, who will hand down Lanez’s sentence, said no.
The lawyers for Lanez had said that a post from his Instagram account shouldn’t have been used as evidence. They said that Megan’s claim that Lanez told her not to go to the police because he was on parole and would get in a lot of trouble if he was caught was not true and that Megan shouldn’t have been able to use her past bad behaviour against her. They also said that the DNA proof that prosecutors used to say that Lanez was probably the shooter was not up to industry standards.
See if any other women you know have been arrested for murd*r or violence:
“I could be your son. I could be your brother,” Lanez pleaded with Herriford as he was led from the courtroom the day before the judge ruled that excluding the disputed evidence wouldn’t have made a difference.
Lanez started putting out mixtapes in 2009, and as his popularity grew, he moved on to albums on big labels. Megan Thee Stallion, who is now 28 years old, was already a big rising star when she was shot, and her popularity has grown even more since then. She won the Grammy for best new artist in 2021 and has had No. 1 hits with “Savage,” which featured Beyoncé, and as a guest with Cardi B on “WAP.”
The accusations against Lanez and the charges that followed led to a lot of false information and hate speech online about the artist whose real name is Megan Pete. This led to talks about misogynoir, which is a type of misogyny that Black women face.
