Kendall Graveman’s Unconventional Journey: From Bullpen to Big Leagues
Baseball was Graveman’s sport throughout his time at Mississippi State University. Before getting called up by the Blue Jays in 2014, he spent parts of two seasons playing baseball in the minor leagues after being selected by them in the eighth round of the 2013 MLB draft.
Since his first complete season in the major leagues, he has only pitched as a starter. However in 2020 after receiving a diagnosis of a benign bone tumor in his cervical spine, he switched to pitching as a reliever. With several MLB teams including the Toronto Blue Jays, Oakland Athletics, Seattle Mariners and Chicago White Sox, Graveman has displayed his talent.
When Graveman was a college student, he played baseball for Mississippi State University, which was the start of his baseball career. He was chosen by the Blue Jays in the eighth round of the 2013 MLB Draft which led to his eventual promotion to the major leagues in 2014.
Although Graveman excelled as a starter, his medical diagnosis of a benign bone lesion in his cervical spine forced him to go to the relief pitcher position in 2020. Graveman was acquired by the Houston Astros in a trade in 2021, where he excelled as a pitcher.
He had a number of shutout outings and in a crucial game against the Mariners, he also conceded a memorable grand slam. Graveman earned a special distinction during the 2021 World Series being the last MLB pitcher to log an at-bat before the National League implemented the designated hitter rule the following year.
He lost his contract at the end of the season. Graveman and the Chicago White Sox agreed to a big three-year, $24 million contract in November 2021. With a 3-4 record in 65 games, a 3.18 ERA, 66 strikeouts and six saves in his first season with the White Sox, he had a great debut season that demonstrated his talent.
In a surprising reversal of events, Graveman was traded back to the Houston Astros in July 2023, bolstering their rotation of pitchers. Graveman is a powerful pitcher who depends on his sinker, which he throws between 91 and 96 mph along with other strong weapons like a cutter, slider and changeup.
Kendall Graveman has demonstrated his resiliency, versatility and undying devotion to the sport he loves throughout his career. He keeps making an everlasting impression on the baseball world with every pitch.
