From Designing Windows To Creating Iconic ‘Cat-Eye’ Frames
Peter Copeland was Altina’s first design work. She designed Fifth Avenue storefronts with him. Here, she worked with Salvador Dali. Altina patents several design inventions later in life. The Harlequin eyeglass frame, or “cat-eye,” characterized glamour in the late 1930s. Altina saw dull frames in an optician’s window and came up with these frames.
She wanted something romantic and whimsical. Altina started by cutting Harlequin masks into frames. She formed a marketing and distribution office after establishing production and negotiating department store arrangements. Altina won the Lord & Taylor Annual American Design Award in 1939 for her avant-garde eyeglass frame.
