Tafari served as the Obamas’ White House chef from 2008 to 2016. After they left the White House he returned to the Obamas’ employ.
He had featured in pictures with the president and in a film that the Obamas had uploaded to YouTube. We are saddened to share the news that Tafari Campbell had passed away. The Obamas shared the statement announcing the passing of Tafari Campbell, their chef and said:
“Tafari was a beloved part of our family, When we first met him, he was a talented sous chef at the White House — creative and passionate about food, and its ability to bring people together.”
The statement continued:
“In the years that followed, we got to know him as a warm, fun, extraordinarily kind person who made all of our lives a little brighter. That’s why, when we were getting ready to leave the White House, we asked Tafari to stay with us, and he generously agreed. He’s been part of our lives ever since, and our hearts are broken that he’s gone.”
Many people were curious about Tafari and the circumstances surrounding his death and his character.
What is the Reason Behind Tafari Campbell’s Death?
Tafari passed away on the evening of July 23 while paddleboarding in Edgartown Great Pond, a sizable body of water that connects to the Atlantic Ocean.
Rumors indicate that police were initially called to the Obama home after hearing tales of a man drowning close by, but it was found that their chef drowns near their house.
As Tafari struggled to stay on the surface, a witness who was paddleboarding with him reported that Tafari had gone underwater and never surfaced. You can see the location where Tafari drowned in the tweet provided below:

Later that day, Tafari’s hat and paddleboard were discovered thanks to the efforts of flight crews, diving teams and boat crews with air support from the US Coast Guard.
The body was discovered on July 24 at about 10 a.m. The state police said:
“The recovery was made approximately 100 feet from shore at a depth of about eight feet, The investigation into the fatality is being conducted by the State Police Detective Unit for the Cape and Islands District and Edgartown Police.”
Tafari drowned and we can say that this might be the reason for his death, but we have to wait for official confirmation. According to the police, the Obama family was not at home when the incident occurred.
Sherise Campbell, his wife paid tribute to him on Instagram and said, “My heart is broken. My life and our family’s life is forever changed.”
