Police report that a 22-year-old former collegiate wrestler from Pennsylvania was killed in a car accident on Tuesday (1 Aug). A tree was struck by Tonee Ellis, of Norristown, who was traveling on Route 22 West in Howe Township, Perry County, at 6:44 in the morning, according to a report from the Pennsylvania State Police.
Ellis’ automobile caught fire while he was still inside, according to State Police, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Ellis was reportedly wearing a seatbelt, but due to the crash and fire, authorities were unable to confirm whether the airbags had activated.
Ellis, a graduate of Montgomery County’s Methacton High School, enrolled at Alvernia University in 2019. He majored in biology and forensic science there and competed on the school’s first-ever wrestling team.

In his first year, Ellis was eligible to compete in the NCAA Division III Championship, but the event was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, thus he was unable to attend.
