O’Shae Sibley, a dancer with connections to Philadelphia who was tragically murdered in Brooklyn over the weekend is being mourned by artists and loved ones. The killing of gay man Sibley is being looked into by the New York Police Department as a potential hate crime.
Beyoncé Honors Stabbed Dancer “O’Shae Sibley” With Special Tribute
An honoring of Sibley could be seen at the top of Beyonce’s official website. It said, “Rest in power O’Shae Sibley,” in white letters against a black background.
Philadelphia-based dance company Sibley had been associated with them since he was a teenager. Philadanco reported Sibley’s death in the following way:
“Philadanco would like to send our sincere Condolences to the family and loved ones of O’Shae Sibley. O’Shae was a student of the Philadelphia School of Dance Arts at Philadanco since the age of 14 and was also in our Apprentice Company D/2.”
“This news is absolutely heartbreaking and we believe no one deserves to be targeted for simply being themselves and living in their truth. We are keeping high hopes that Justice will be served. He will be missed dearly. We ask that you also keep his family and loved ones in your prayers.”
Sibley relocated to New York from Philadelphia in order to advance his dancing profession. Residents and acquaintances told that Sibley frequently danced in public.
The 28-year-old Sibley was reportedly dancing and vogueing while he and his friends topped off at a Brooklyn gas station on Saturday, July 29, 2023 according to police and loved ones. Neighbor Beckenbaur Hamilton said:
“They were dancing, They were filling up on gas, but they were voguing.”
The station was told by witnesses that they were dancing when a man approached them and made homophobic remarks. Sibley is captured in a surveillance video arguing with a man. Police reported that after that argument, Sibley was stabbed.

New York State Senator Brad Hoylman-Signal tweeted:
“Heartbroken and enraged to learn about O’Shae Sibley’s death this weekend in New York. Despite homophobes’ best efforts, gay joy is not crime”
