The last of a line of American classic crooners, Tony Bennett, has away at the age of 96. Bennett’s publicist, Sylvia Weiner, announced his passing on Friday, stating he did so in his native New York, according to The Associated Press. Bennett had been identified with Alzheimer’s disease in 2016, however, Weiner did not specify the cause.

Anthony Dominick Benedetto, the father of Bennett, was born in the Astoria neighborhood of the Queens borough of New York. He created hits for seven decades, including the everlasting I Left My Heart in San Francisco, thanks to his unfailingly upbeat spirit that crossed generations.

The former singing waiter was referred to be “the best singer in the business” by another famed US performer, Frank Sinatra, as he rose to fame in the 1950s. In the future, Bennett would go on to win 20 Grammys, including a lifetime achievement award.

In a Twitter post, Sinatra’s daughter and singer Nancy Sinatra called Bennet-

“One of the most splendid people who ever lived” in a tweet. “Kind, loving, talented, and generous, he never let us down,” she said.

Take a look at the tweet below by Nancy Sinatra:

In the latter half of the 1970s, when he was in his 50s, he was confronted with a failing marriage, a cocaine addiction, a $2 million tax burden, and dim job prospects. He was able to escape it by handing over control to his son Danny, who helped raise his father’s profile among younger generations.

His colleagues become more varied as he got older. Bennett released a duet album with Lady Gaga in 2014 while he was in his late 80s, and the two embarked on a world tour together in 2015. He collaborated with a variety of artists on his well-known Duet albums, including Bono of U2, Aretha Franklin, Willie Nelson, and former Beatle Paul McCartney.

Numerous memorials to Bennett have been posted online by fans, celebrities, and other artists in response to news of his passing. Bennett was described as “irreplaceable” by singer Elton John in a condolence Instagram post for his family.

Here is the post Elton John shared on Instagram:

Bennett was described as a “global treasure” who “utilized his platform as a legendary performer to stand for Civil Rights” by Bernice King, the daughter of civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr.
