Jill Martin's Cancer Diagnosis, Will Undergo Double Mastectomy

Jill Martin, a lifestyle writer for the Today Show, said she has breast cancer and will have a mastectomy. Martin cried as he told the news Today on 18 July.

“This feels like an out-of-body experience,” she said as she choked back tears on Today. “It feels like someone else is telling this story. … It’s happened fast.”

Martin, who is 47 years old, wrote an article about her experience on Today.com. In the essay, she said she was diagnosed on June 26 after discovering she had a BRCA2 gene mutation, which she got from her father, who also had the transformation.

“I always associated this with something women get and so many people I’ve spoken to have said, ‘I didn’t know this was something men should be tested for,’” Martin said. “Please see your doctors and see if genetic testing is appropriate.”

Here is a youtube video by Today related to her illness:

She said she will have a double mastectomy this week, followed by repair surgery and a more detailed treatment plan. She told co-anchors Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb that she feels her doctors are taking good care of her.

“My grandmother passed away from breast cancer. And my beautiful mother — who is healthy now — had a double mastectomy in her late 40s after being diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ, often referred to as stage 0 breast cancer,” Martin wrote.

Martin said she feels “devastated, sad, and scared” but also “empowered, strong,” adding, “I have the best doctors and my family, and I’ve got this.”

She also said that she would need to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes because she is more likely to get ovarian cancer. She said that her chance of getting ovarian cancer is 20% higher.

“I don’t think I can live with that percentage.” Martin wrote that she was telling her story now: “I couldn’t go through months of operations and start to heal physically and mentally without shouting from the rooftops for everyone to check with their doctors to see if genetic testing is right for them.”
