On THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS, Jack Abbott, the head of the Abbott family, has been on an unexpected business trip for a few weeks. But Peter Bergman, who played Jack in the soap opera, had to stop acting right away because of something that happened in real life. Bergman had to have surgery on his eye right away to fix a damaged retina, as he told Soap Opera Digest.
The medical problem that Bergman had seemed to come out of the blue. On his way to see his family on California’s central coast, the star saw something strange on the inside corner of his left eye, but he didn’t tell anyone. He said, “All night long, I saw something creeping into my vision, and by the night’s end, it was like a curtain closing in on the centre of my vision.”

When Bergman woke up the following day, he immediately knew something was wrong. His sister got him an appointment with an optometrist in San Luis Obispo, who diagnosed him with a detached retina. For Bergman to regain his sight, he would need surgery immediately, which the doctor said should be done at home. Bergman’s wife, Mariellen, knew the sister-in-law of the Los Angeles doctor who was mentioned, and the actor already had an appointment with that doctor the next day.
Before Bergman went in for surgery, he told his bosses at Y&R, and a plan was made for Jack’s sudden exit. The care from his coworkers, especially during a tough time of recovery, “made me feel unique.” He said, “I had to keep my face level with the floor for 50 minutes out of every hour for seven days.” Mariellen set up a unique “contraption” that let Bergman watch TV, but he said, “My favourite things to do are work out and read books, and I couldn’t do either.”
It felt like a very long time. Mishael Morgan, who played Amanda and had the same surgery as Bergman last spring, was a big help to her during the tough time. He said, “I learned as much as possible about what to expect from her.” She was perfect.
The winner of an Emmy is excited about Jack’s “excellent stuff” coming up and is happy to be back at work at Y&R. He is very grateful that his medical problem was resolved quickly and well. He said it was an incredible journey and a short time of being blind. “It was a wake-up call about how important sight is. I don’t think it’s a given.
