Jane Birkin, an actress and singer who made France her home and enchanted the nation with her English grace, easy elegance and social activity passed away at the age of 76.
Shortly after hearing of her passing, President Emmanuel Macron tweeted:
“Because she embodied freedom, because she sang the most beautiful words in our language, Jane Birkin was a French icon.”

In her adopted country, where she moved at the age of just 20 and without any knowledge of the French language, Birkin spent over six decades in the spotlight. She was jokingly known as France’s favorite “anglaise.”
When she fell in love with French actor and singer Serge Gainsbourg soon after arriving in Paris, Birkin’s climb to stardom. Gainsbourg and Birkin who are nearly 20 years apart in age, rapidly drew the attention of the general public.
The duo is not married but they frequently worked together professionally most notably when they sang together on the sensual duet “Je time… moi non plus,” which was later prohibited in various nations due to its expIicit lyrics.
Although the exact reason for Birkin’s passing is unknown, she had been in poor health recently and suffered a stróke in 2021.
One of the actress’ final public appearances before her passing was at the premiere of the documentary “Jane by Charlotte” which explores her bond with her daughter Charlotte. Birkin has two daughters named Doillon and Charlotte Gainsbourg with Serge.
