This week, Ty Pennington needed to undergo a moderate interior makeover. A throat abscess that obstructed his airway and put the former presenter of Trading Spaces and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition in the ICU just two days after attending the Los Angeles premiere of Barbie has left him healing, he revealed on Instagram.
“This last week has been interesting, from the red carpet to the intensive care unit! I’m healing but I’m fine right now,” he wrote.
“In order to explain why I went MIA… For @barbiethemovie, I attended the red carpet premiere on Sunday; on Monday, I went to Colorado to begin production in Breckinridge; and on Tuesday, I awoke at 4 a.m. with severe breathing difficulties. It turned out that the painful throat I had been experiencing for the past month was actually an abscess that had gotten so big that it was blocking my airway.
He said, “The next thing I knew, I was intubated and flown to the ICU in Denver.” I had surgery on Wednesday, and I was taken out of the intensive care unit yesterday afternoon. Thank you so much to the wonderful team at Summit Health in Frisco and St. Anthony’s in Lakewood, CO for taking such wonderful care of me.
The host of HGTV posted images of his recovery in the intensive care unit as well as one of himself posing on the red carpet at the Barbie premiere.

To advertise HGTV’s four-part special Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge, which he will compete in as part of one of eight teams of HGTV stars remodeling a Southern California home into a true representation of Barbie’s famous pink home, Pennington attended the Barbie premiere on Sunday.
The series’ July 16 at 8 p.m. debut has already been filmed, so Pennington’s medical issue won’t interfere with it. He presently serves as the host of the HGTV shows Rock the Block and Battle on the Beach.
