On Wednesday 12 July, an Ohio judge revoked the medical license of a TikTok celebrity plastic surgeon who had been accused of endangering patients by broadcasting their operations live online.

After a vote, the Ohio State Medical Board decided to permanently remove Dr. Katharine Roxanne Grawe’s (aka Dr. Roxy) medical license for “failure to meet standards of care.”

The board had already put Grawe’s ability to practice medicine in Ohio on hold in November 2022, but Wednesday’s judgment makes it clear that she will never be able to do so again. The board members believed that Grawe’s social media followers took precedence over her actual patients, which resulted in serious errors.

While her patients were on the operating table, the doctor would talk to the camera and field questions from her fans and viewers.

According to the notification the medical board provided when they revoked her license, one of the patients whose cosmetic treatment Grawe aired to her more than 800,000 followers needed emergency care a week after surgery because Grawe allegedly perforated her bowel.

The notification claims that the unnamed patient suffered from bacterial illnesses in her belly and cognitive function loss due to the high levels of toxins in her blood.

The board members stated in the notification that two other patients suffered devastating sequelae due to Grawe’s alleged lack of care. After having cosmetic treatments performed by Grawe, including a Brazilian butt lift and liposuction, one patient experienced severe abdominal pain the following day and required additional abdominal surgery.

Grawe had been warned by the board before about her social media use, so once her license was suspended, she made her TikTok account private.

In 2018, the state board expressed its worry to her about the filmed procedures, citing potential patient privacy and ethics issues. The board secretary that the plastic surgeon enroll in a course on medical ethics and professionalism in 2021.

The surgeon-turned-social media influencer said her husband had left her because of the stress and her children had been bullied at school because of the media attention.

She claimed that her goal in making these movies was to inform her viewers about cosmetic procedures.
