Joseph Chebet passed away after becoming famous for winning the New York and Boston marathons in 1999. His victories helped bring international attention to Kenya. According to his brother Ben Chebet, who spoke to Kenya’s Daily Nation, Chebet died after spending three days in the hospital due to a brief illness.

Chebet came back the next year, 1999, and won both the Boston and New York City marathons to exact his revenge for the previous year’s close calls. In 1996, he won the Amsterdam Marathon, and in 2003, he won the Vienna Marathon.
