What did Huw Edwards Say about His Health Issues?
The veteran BBC news anchor stated that he has been dealing with depression and anxiety. He said that his symptoms “hit him in a strong wave and then go away.” He said that many times it had left him “bedridden.” He continued:
“At least I now know when I’m going to enter a phase like that. Your mind goes into a place where you don’t want to do anything. You can’t make any decisions.”
Edwards acknowledged that he occasionally had to kind of push his way through it in order to go to work and perform professionally. He mentioned how his friends and superiors initially responded to the disclosure, describing it as a “deep freeze-silence” from them.
He continued by stating that a coworker had said that BBC doesn’t want people to think there’s a nutter reading the Ten o’clock news. His previous employers though were encouraging.
The Ten O’Clock News host said during his interview on a podcast run by BBC journalists Jane Garvey and Fi Glove:
“People don’t understand what the BBC is like. It can be a very sympathetic and supportive organization. It can be not that. It’s a very bureaucratic organization.”
When his father passed away in 2010, the BBC news anchor admitted that his weight gain was caused by depression and that he used junk food to numb his emotional pain.
To get healthy, he sought the assistance of lightweight boxing champion Clinton McKenzie as suggested by his wife Vicky. The Irish Mirror claims that Huw Edwards has since consistently concentrated on his training which has aided him in overcoming his depression.
Since 1984, Huw Edwards has been a part of the BBC, first as a trainee and then as a key broadcasting presenter.
